The department offers research projects in various areas like Medical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Genomics & Proteomics, Plant & Microbial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Novel Drug Delivery Systems, Nano-biotechnology, Infectious diseases, Lifestyle diseases, and Food Technology. Admission to the PhD programme is conducted in the month of January (Even Semester) and June (Odd Semester) every year through a written entrance examination followed by an interview.

The PhD program typically begins with initial coursework aimed at strengthening research skills, followed by the formulation and approval of a detailed research plan. Under the guidance of one or more faculty supervisors, the student undertakes independent research, which involves a thorough literature review, data collection and analysis, and the development of a theoretical or experimental contribution. The culmination of the PhD is the submission of a written thesis, which must be defended in a public oral examination known as a viva voce. The maximum duration allowed is 6 years, applicable to both categories. This maximum period is calculated from the date of enrolment to the date of submission of the Ph.D. thesis.

In exceptional circumstances, to the satisfaction of the Vice-Chancellor: (a) a candidate (especially women or disabled (> 40%) scholars) may be granted an extension for a maximum of 2 years; (b) a relaxation of maximum one year in the minimum duration is allowed if the candidate is full-time.
